I am the others...

Sometimes I think I'm really kind of schizophrenic. I really feel like 2 people sometimes. Though I know that isn't the definition of being schizophrenic, it is a rather socially accepted way to describe how I feel.

This morning driving to work, I heard to separate songs that are so in opposition to one another and yet, I have and do feel like both of them are me.

As Cool As I am
Dar Williams

Yea, there was a time I didnt like the love, I liked the climbers,
I was no sister then, I was running out of time and one liners,
And I was afraid, like you are when youre too young to know the time, and
So I watched the way you take your fear and hoard the horizon,
You point, you have a word for every woman you can lay your eyes on,
Like you own them just because you bought the time,
And you turn to me, you say you hope Im not threatened,

Oh -- Im not that petty, as cool as I am, I thought youd know this already,
I will not be afraid of women, I will not be afraid of women.

So now were at a club, you watch the woman dancing, she is drunk,
She is smiling and shes falling in a slow, descending funk,
And the whole bar is loud and proud and everybodys trying, yeah.
You play the artist, saying, "Is it how she moves, or how she looks?"
I say, its loneliness suspended to our own like grappling hooks,
And as long as shes got noise, shes fine.
But I could teach her how I learned to dance when the musics ended,

Oh -- and thats not petty, as cool as I am, I thought youd know this already,
I will not be afraid of women, I will not be afraid of women.

You tried to make me doubt, to make me guess, tried to make me feel like a little less,
Oh, I liked you when your soul was bared, I thought you knew how to be scared,
And now its amazing what you did to make me stay,
But truth is just like time, it catches up and it just keeps going,

And so Im leaving, you can find out how much better things can get,
And if it helps, Id say I feel a little worse than I did when we met,
So when you find someone else, you can try again, it might work next time,
You look out of the kitchen window and you shake your head and say low,
"If I could believe that stuff, Id say that woman has a halo,"
And I look out and say, "Yeah, shes really blond,"
And then I go outside to join the others, I am the others,

Oh -- and thats not easy, I dont know what you saw, I want somebody who sees me,
I will not be afraid of women, I will not be afraid of women.

When I was 23, I dated a man. I actually thought a lot about him this weekend as I was in the city in which he lived. I had known him for a few years before we dated. I really try to find nice things to say about people but there isn't really anything nice to say about him. He was pretty terrible to me. He was abusive - emotionally and sexually. He reminded me constantly how lucky "someone like me" was to have "someone like him". How I wasn't worthy of him, how I was lucky he'd even entertain being with someone like me (which to him, was the fact that I'm overweight -- I should have been grateful to him for compromising in such a generous way). And I put up with it. Heck, I embraced it -- I was lucky to be with him (or so I thought) -- he was a few years older than me, he had a career when I was just starting working, he had some money and promised to take care of me. And he told me he loved me. And I embraced it until he told me he loved me AND his ex-fiance and he was going to date both of us and in fact, the 3 of us could live together happily ever after and I was going to be fine with it. Those were actually his words. I was going to be fine with it. Well, for one of the few times in my life, I stood up for myself. I wasn't going to be fine with it. I walked away from him and never looked back. I remember hearing this song for the first time and it became my anthem. I wasn't going to let myself feel like less than other women -- I was going to realize that some people just don't see the quality of people.

To this day, I surround myself with amazingly strong and wonderful women. I am lucky to have the circle that I do -- some are old and some are new. But here I sit. Totally afraid of other women. I look at other women with amazing envy -- of the clothes they have, of the jobs they have, of the way other people look at them, of the way that other men feel about them. I find myself jealous all of the time. I look at other women with tremendous envy -- for living the life that I've always wanted but never had. Some women inspire men to be better people -- to work hard to win the love of a good woman -- to be deserving and lucky enough to be with this amazing woman. I've never been that woman. Never. You'd think 8 days from 34, I'd be coming to terms with it. I haven't. Part of me hasn't because I don't want to. I don't want it to be true. I want to be good enough, I want to be special enough. I want to feel ok in my own skin. I never have. I wonder if I ever will. I constantly wonder why it is people keep me around. I constantly am trying to prove that I am worth the time and effort and I feel like I fall short constantly. Like I can never do enough because I've never been enough.

Which leads me to the next song...this is one that has resonated with me for years and I hadn't heard it in years until this morning. It's painful to be ordinary. It's difficult to feel like you could blend into the walls. I look at the people around me in my life and they are so amazing and special. They are tremendous people. And I'm just me, ya know?

I Am So Ordinary
Paula Cole

I nearly died I suicided softly
I saw her shadow through the cafe window
I watched you lean across the table
I watched you whisper in her ear

And she is your holy Mary
And I am so ordinary
And you can use me if you want to
I know you need me just like an old soft shoe

She looks like me but a bit prettier
She's a skater and a ballet dancer
I saw her on your motorcycle
In the seat I thought was meant for me

And she is your holy Mary
And I am so ordinary
And you can use me if you want to
I know you need me just like an old soft shoe

And when your mother came to Boston you disappeared
And then I saw you three together
I guess she makes the best impression
With her charming femininity...

And she is your holy Mary
And I am so ordinary
And you can use me if you want to
I know you need me just like an old soft shoe

Oh but I am the one you will call when alone
And I am the one who will give when she's gone
And so I give
So I give

I tell myself that love is truly giving
Somehow I justify this
Hoping you will understand me
Hoping you will love me back

And she is your holy Mary
And I am so ordinary
And she is your Queen Cleopatra
And I'm just your morning after
And she is your Star Spangled Banner
And I am just Frere Jaque
And you can lose me if you want to

And I am so ordinary

another one from the archives...

Somebody
Depeche Mode

I want somebody to share

Share the rest of my life
Share my innermost thoughts
Know my intimate details
Someone who'll stand by my side
And give me support
And in return
She'll get my support
She will listen to me
When I want to speak
About the world we live in
And life in general
Though my views may be wrong
They may even be perverted
She will hear me out
And won't easily be converted
To my way of thinking
In fact she'll often disagree
But at the end of it all
She will understand me

I want somebody who cares
For me passionately
With every thought and with every breath
Someone who'll help me see things
In a different light
All the things I detest
I will almost like
I don't want to be tied
To anyone's strings
I'm carefully trying to steer clear
Of those things
But when I'm asleep
I want somebody
Who will put their arms around me
And kiss me tenderly
Though things like this
Make me sick
In a case like this
I'll get away with it

Here's another one that I love. I remember the first time I heard it -- I was standing in the middle of Rover Village at Camp Conrad Weiser and in a split second I thought "that's it -- that's exactly what I want."

Confessions of a Barry Manilow fan....

Weekend in New England

Last night I wave goodbye
Now its seems years
I'm back in the city
Where nothing is clearBut thoughts of me holding you
Bringing us near
And tell me
When will our eyes meet?
When can I touch you?
When will this strong yearning endAnd when will
I hold you again
Time in New England
Took me away
To long rocky beaches
And you by the bay
We started a story
Who's end must now wait
And tell me
When will our eyes meet?
When can I touch you?
When will this strong yearning endAnd when will
I hold you again
I feel the change comingI feel the wind blow
I feel brave and daring
I feel my blood flow
With you I could bring out
All the love that I have
With you there's a heaven
So earth ain't so bad
And tell me
When will our eyes meet?
When can I touch you?
When will this strong yearning endAnd when will
I hold you again

Ready To Take A Chance Again

You remind me
I live in a shell,
Safe from the past, and doing' okay, but not very well.
No jolts, no surprises,
No crisis arises:
My life goes along as it should,it's all very nice, but not very good.
And I'm Ready To Take A Chance Again,
Ready to put my love on the line with you.
Been living with nothing to show for it;
You get what you get when you go for it,
And I'm Ready To Take Chance Again with you.
When she left me in all my despair,
I just held on,
My hopes were all gone.
Then I found you there.
And I'm Ready To Take A Chance Again
Ready To Take A Chance Again with you,
With you.
Mandy
Oh Mandy
well,You came and you gave without taking,
But I sent you away.
Oh, Mandy
well,Kissed me and stopped me from shaking,
And I need you today.
Oh, Mandy!

I won’t lie – when I was a kid, I was a DIE HARD Barry Manilow fan – hell, I still kind of am – but only the old stuff, not the new.

I used to sit in front of my mother’s stereo and listen to the Barry Manilow Live Album OVER AND OVER AND OVER again. I used to pretend I was going to marry him and we’d live happily ever after. Certainly someone as romantic as he must have been to write the songs that he did would love me, right? Well, I believed that as a kid. Little did I know then that I didn’t really come with the right parts for him (or so I think!)

But I listened to these 3 songs this morning on my drive to work. I believed as a kid in real, honest to God romance. I believed in someone coming to sweep me off of my feet. I believed in the marriages I saw on TV – with families that while crazy, were very much in love with each other. I believed that someday, someone would love me as much as I knew that I could love back. I believed that someone would simply ache for me the way that I would ache for them.

The sad truth is that at 33, I’ve never had that. I’ve never had someone love me as much as I loved them – or as much as I am able to love. And that reality hurts. A lot.

There is a program on NPR called this I believe and I love it. I love listening to the hope (for the most part) that people believe in because I have that hope. I believe in the goodness of people and I believe in love. Real, true love. Even though I have never known it.

It is my own challenge to believe that it is just because I haven’t found it yet and not because it doesn’t exist for me – because I am somehow unworthy of it. It is that with which I struggle – to stay positive. To continue to believe in my own worth and ability to be loved.
I continue to believe.

least complicated?

Least Complicated
Indigo Girls

I sit two stories above the street
Its awful quiet here since love fell asleep
Theres life down below me though
The kids are walking home from school

Some long ago when we were taught
That for whatever kind of puzzle you got
You just stick the right formula in
A solution for every fool

I remember the time when I came so close to you
Sent me skipping my class and running from school
And I bought you that ring cause I never was cool
What makes me think I could start clean slated
The hardest to learn was the least complicated

So I just sit up in the house and resist
And not be seen until I cease to exist
A kind of conscientious objection
A kind of dodging the draft

The boy and girl are holding hands on the street
And I dont want to but I think you just wait
Its more than just eye to eye
Learn the things I could never apply

I remember the time when I came so close with you
I let everything go it seemed the only truth
And I bought you that ring, it seemed the thing to do

What makes me think I could start clean slated
The hardest to learn was the least complicated
So what makes me think I could start clean slated
The hardest to learn was the least complicated

Im just a mirror of a mirror myself
All the things that I do
And the next time I fall Im gonna have to recall
Its isnt love its only something new

I sit two stories above the street
Its awful quiet here since love fell asleep
Theres life down below me though
The kids are walking home from school

Im remember the time when I came so close with you
Sent me skipping my class and running from school
And I bought you that ring cause I never was cool

What makes me think I could start clean slated
The hardest to learn was the least complicated
So what makes me think I could start clean slated
The hardest to learn was the least complicated
The least complicated
The least complicated

I was thinking on my drive to work today that my life is really complicated....it seems like there are just no easy answers...I want to say anymore but I'm not entirely sure there have EVER been easy answers.

Too many of life's obvious questions, there are no easy answers for me...
  • So, are you married? -- well....yes but it's complicated....
  • How is work? -- well, it's going ok but it's complicated....
  • Are you dating anyone? -- well...yeah but it's complicated...
  • Are you happier now than you were a year ago? -- well...yeah, but it's complicated...
Do we see a theme here? I understand that life is certainly complicated and that it is always easy to look at someone else's life and go "wow, they have it EASY" but from where they sit, I am sure that things are complicated for them.

I find it very easy to focus on the negative in life. All the things that are missing. All the things that I want but aren't there -- it's easy to point and go "yup, that's it -- that's the problem" so I'm trying very hard to focus on being positive. I'm trying to see the gems and beauty that exist in the complications. Even in the complications are moments of certainty and are moments of good and happiness. Would I like for someone to say "yup, here's the plan, start down the path and life will be EASY"? HELL YEAH! Is that going to happen anytime soon? HELL NO! So I take the complications. I even try to embrace the complications. There are lessons there. There have to be. Everything in life is an opportunity to learn and to grow -- an opportunity to become a better person. To be more understanding, to be more loving, to be yourself, less complicated.

Imagine being personally uncomplicated - imagine being transparent and being exactly who you are and enjoying that. I need to learn to enjoy that part of myself more often because I'm terribly hard on myself.

I need to learn to be less complicated.

confessions of a lyric junkie

someone else's life
joshua radin
and somehow i'm leading someone else's life
i cut her star down with my knife
and right now i still see the way the moon
plays this tune though our night's died

my hands shake
my knees quake
it's every day
the same way

cause then came you
then there's you
i keep your picture
in my worn-through shoes
then there's you
then came you
when i'm lost
i look at my picture of you

and somehow i'll make tonight our own
show you every way i've grown since i met you
and right now i'll be the boy in your next song
i'll learn the parts and play along if you let me

my hands shake
my knees quake
it's every day
the same way

cause then came you
then there's you
i keep your picture
in my worn-through shoes
then there's you
then came you
when i'm lost
i look at my picture of you

if you let me i'll show the world to you
yes if you let me i'll know just what to do

cause then came you
then there's you
i keep your picture
in my worn-through shoes
when i'm lost in your eyes
i see the way for me

if you know me for more than say 30 seconds -- you'll know i'm a song lyric junkie.

i need to write -- it would be good for me to do so but i often struggle with inspiration. well, that's not true. i have inspiration but it rarely tends to be when i am sitting in front of a computer with time to write -- it usually happens in my car, listening to music...so maybe this will help?

anyway -- this song. current favourite song. it absolutely applies to how i feel about someone. actually, a few someones including myself. i am very good at looking outside of myself and understanding other people -- i get other people -- i don't really get myself as well and that is going to be the focus of the big 34 which is officially just a few weeks away.

It's always a Steve song....

Ok -- I admit it. I look psychotic in that picture. I look so completely out of my head that I am about to split out of my own skin. Which is appropriate because that was how I felt. This picture was taken December 3, 2005 in Sewell, NJ at the BNL Christmas show. Charlie and I went and had a total blast. We got there super early because we had no idea how long it would take to get there and as a result we had the good fortune of being there when the band came out to sign autographs and take photos. I was so chicken to go talk to Steve but Charlie dragged me and once I got up there with him, I was nervous and babbling but not the completely silent star struck freak I figured I'd be. It was fun and a great show.

That was 11 months ago and it seems like light years ago. I'm going to see BNL Thursday night with Micki and Sarah and Kevin -- first time I have seen BNL without Charlie. He was the one who really got me into them -- saw them for the first time on a trip to LA when he found tickets on Ebay for us -- something I would never have done on my own but we wound up having a fantastic little vacation. That was about 3 years ago this time. Again, light years.

But the point of this post -- it is always a Steve song...for many, Ed is the hotty of the band and while I shall not deny he is one good looking man -- for me, it is Steve. The rest of the guys could all but disappear and it'd still be great. Hey, when we saw him solo in Toronto, he was great - even doing BNL songs! Ed writes the silly songs, Steve writes the powerful songs and he has the vocal chops to back it up. It isn't surprising that my favorite song on damn near every album is a Steve song....

Gordon - "What A Good Boy"
Maybe You Should Drive - "Everything Old is New Again"
Born on a Pirate Ship - "Break Your Heart"
Stunt - "Call And Answer"
Maroon - "Conventioneers"
Everything to Everyone - "War on Drugs"
BLAM - "Maybe You're Right"

Maybe You're Right

It was often talked about
It was often raised
But nothing was ever done about it
To hear the way they talked about it
Noone could be saved
But nothing was ever done about it

Shall I take back everything I've ever said
And live my whole life in silence instead?

It was oversimplified
It was underthought
And nothing was ever done to stop it
Everything was fortified by
All the lies we bought
And nothing was ever done to stop it

Shall I take back everything I've ever said
And live my whole life in silence instead?

Shall I take back everything I've ever said
(Shall I take back all my attacks? All of my accusations?)
And live my whole life in silence instead?
(All my mistrust - we never discussed anyone's reservations)

There was a time
When a crime was a crime
Now I think I'm losing my mind
Or taking it all too hard
Taking it all too hard
Taking it all too hard

Shall I take back all my attacks? All of my accusations?
All my mistrust - we never discussed anyone's reservations

Shall I take back everything I've ever said
(Shall I take back all my attacks? All of my accusations?)
And live my whole life in silence instead?
(All my mistrust - we never discussed anyone's reservations)

Shall I take back everything I've ever said
(Shall I take back all my attacks? All of my accusations?)
And live my whole life in silence instead?
(All my mistrust - we never discussed anyone's reservations)

Maybe you're right
Maybe you're right
Maybe you're right
But I don't think so
Maybe you're right
Maybe you're right
Maybe you're right
But I don't think so

Am I ever going to get this going?

I keep thinking I should be a blogger and what do I do about it? Nothing. But I'm gonna try to change that again.

2006 has been a HUGE year of change for me. Pretty much if you can name it, I changed it.

I'm mere moments from being officially divorced.

I changed jobs -- twice and am much happier where I am

I live alone.

I went on more bad dates this summer than a girl can shake a stick at.

I've met a totally great guy.

I said at the beginning of the breakup of my marriage that I wanted to fast forward just to know the end of the movie -- I didn't mind going back and going through it all but I wanted to go forward and just see how it ended -- the suspense was killing me.

On some level, I feel that more now than ever. I am dying to know where I end up. I know I will end up happy and fulfilled -- I simply won't allow it to end up any other way but I'm just so very curious as to what that is going to look like!

January 15, 2006

Great start there, eh?

1 + week back into blogging and I've already fallen off the blog wagon...

oh well, here I am.

I am on this major organizational kick -- I want to get my house in order and put together like a real grownup's house. There are so many projects I would like to do around my house. It is a nice place, very big. About 2300 sq ft which is just huge when you think that it is only for 2 people. We have a 3rd floor bedroom/loft thing and I can't really remember the last time I was up there for a real purpose.

My dining room looks exactly the way I want it to...now I am working on my living room next. In the next few days I'll post pictures as it comes together.

Hi. My name is Pat Robertson and I'm a wackjob.

The more I read of the stuff that this guy comes up with the more I am convinced that he must introduce himself to people that way because there is no way in HELL that he can think he's sane.

First he thinks we should just kill Hugo Chavez...

Then he thinks that the township of Dover, PA shouldn't ask God for help should they find themselves at the wrong end of a hurricane or something...

Now he thinks that God is smitting Ariel Sharon...

Really -- please. This has to be a joke. He has to go home and laugh his ass off at how completely RIDICULOUS he is.

31 years and still kicking...

And no, I am not talking about me...the above picture is me -- circa 1976 I would guess...and I can't be held responsible for the dress...I am sure it wasn't my choice AND it was the 70's after all...

Anyone who has known me for any signifcant period of time knows about Puppy -- my aunt Susan made Puppy for me for my first Christmas and I have slept with Puppy almost every night of my life since then...and yes, I still do. Puppy has no ears, is missing 1 leg and had very little of the fabric that he came with upon delivery to me BUT I feel like something is missing when I don't have Puppy.

Wonder how many other nearly 32 year olds sleep with their childhood stuffed animal....more than that, I wonder how many people will fess up to it ;)

Friends are friends forever..

And friends are friends forever
If the lord's the lord of them
And a friend will not say never - cause the welcome will not end
Though it's hard to let you gone the father's hands we know
That a lifetime's not too long to live as friends.
- Michael W. Smith

Yeah -- I' m not sure who is more surprised than me that I just quoted Christian Rock in my blog but there you have it.

Despite my own personal convictions, I have always loved the chorus of this song and the above quoted text. Ignoring the religious implications, the sentiment is just lovely.

This weekend I had the honour and privileged of spending time in Ottawa with 4 amazing women. Three of whom I had met in person before, 1 of whom I had not -- we all met on that there internet thing in the process of planning our weddings and in the aftermath. I knew when we were planning our weddings, that some of us wouldn't make it. Divorce is very real and in fact, one of the women with us this weekend has divorced and is now engaged to the love of her life -- everything for a reason. What I never in my wildest dreams imagined was that we would have to deal with the death of one of our spouses -- at least not 4 years after the fact but sadly, we did. On December 22, 2004, my dear, dear friend Laurie lost her husband Brian. When I tell you that I was mere moments from flying up to Ottawa on 12/22, I'm not kidding. When I tell you that before last Friday, I had never met Laurie in person -- you may think I am crazy. But the one thing I have learned in the last almost 11 years is that love isn't rational. Friendships are made because they need to be made and they are all important and all significant. The people who you are meant to have in your life find you -- or you find them but there is a reason for it all.

I have always believed that when you love someone, you should just tell them -- not telling them is a perfect moment lost and there are too few moments in our lives to risk losing any.

Hug the people in your life -- heaven knows I try to.

January 30, 2005

OK -- yeah, I kinda suck at this

I should be better -- I really should. Almost daily I have ideas about stuff I should write...but clearly, I don't. Hell, I doubt anyone even reads this but who knows. Maybe I'll be better.

It's Sunday night -- I am headed to Buffalo tomorrow (yea, stop being jealous because I know you are). I've just spent the last hour searching for anyone and everyone I might possibly know on Friendster.com. I found a few people including Seth -- I hope he actually checks in and writes back. Seth was my best friend in the 8th grade and I guess we were kind of boyfriend and girlfriend in that way that you were when you were 13 in 1987. We spent all of our time together, we talked on the phone for hours a night -- we went on 1 date and he kissed me the night we graduated from the 8th grade. And then we were both so weirded out that we never did that again. Sometimes I really wonder where all of the people go that were once the most important parts of my life...maybe it's just a lesson that I need to learn to cherish the people that are here now because they are all here for a reason...so if you're reading and you're in my life...thank you :) Don't nobody go nowhere!

All the things I should have done but I never did….

How many of you remember the movie “She’s Having a Baby”? Kevin Bacon, Alec Baldwin, Elizabeth McGovern – John Hughes movie of the 80’s about a guy who finds himself having to grow up fairly quickly when he realizes he’s a married man with a baby on the way.

Great movie – not my favourite John Hughes movie – that remains “Some Kind of Wonderful” but just a good movie regardless. Never mind that I do love me a good Kevin Bacon movie because well, I have a Kevin Bacon number of 1.

I am sitting on a plane on my way to Seattle as I write this (love having a laptop on a long flight) and I’m listening to Peppermint Patty – the i.P.O.D (iPod of Doom) and she decided I needed to hear “This Woman’s Work” by Kate Bush – a song that is featured heavily in “She’s Having a Baby.” Peppermint Patty seems to have a knack at finding exactly the songs I need to hear. And I know it’s not just me. On the Barenaked Ladies blog, Steve Page (sigh!!!) mentioned the same thing – that his iPod always seems to know exactly what he needs to hear.

So, I’m listening to that song which I have always loved – probably my favourite Kate Bush song and thought about what a great arrangement of it I could put together with just a guitar. Of course, I need to learn to play guitar, which I have been saying I am going to do for YEARS, and never seem to do. I think that will be my New Year’s resolution, learn to play the guitar and start to sing. I’m not a bad singer, I’m not fabulous but I’m not bad and the more I do it, the better I get. I used to be very good and then I had Mono and Strep throat the summer between my sophomore and junior years of college and it changed my voice forever. I don’t think I’ll ever be one of those guitarists that people say “wow, she’s just amazing.” I won’t be a Richard Thompson or a Patty Larkin but I could be ok and I could sing and I could put together a CD, which has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember. I would love to pony up the nerve and play open mike nights. I would love to pony up the nerve and sing and not worry what anyone thinks…if I could make some music that would impact someone the way that music impacts me? Wow, that would be about the coolest thing I can think of.

All before 10

Man -- it's quite a day already and it's not even 10 yet -- hell, it's not even 9:30.

I woke up this morning -- it was cold, it was rainy, it was a day when I didn't want to get out of bed. The day could have been better had I been able to come to work in my pj's but sadly, I can't.

So, drug myself out of bed, put on some respectable looking clothes and got to work. On the way my car decided that it wanted to fishtail all over the road as I turned onto Matthews Road. Then I got on 202 which was, in essence, a parking lot. Got to work, got inside -- discovered donuts on the table near my desk -- damn the person who brought those in. Ran down to the cafe, got a drink, came back upstairs, had another donut hole and sat down to have what I was hoping would be a quiet morning. No. Got a frantic IM from someone that the guy was waiting at our training center to service our overhead projector. UGH! I completely forgot. Got up, ran to car, couldn't understand why car wasn't moving. Got scared that it died. Realized I hadn't started it yet and got to the training center. Now we are 25 minutes into something that should have taken 5 and I really need to get back to the office to do some real stuff. BAH!

More Than This...

One of my favourite movie scenes of all times has got to be the scene in "Lost In Translation" when Scarlett Johansson does a less than great karaoke version of Roxy Music's "More Than This." It's just full of all of this passion and longing -- the way she and Bill Murray look at each other is just amazing. (By the way, I think Bill Murray was ROBBED for the Oscar last year, but that's a story for another day.)

"More than this -- there is nothing
More than this -- tell me one thing
More than this -- there is nothing"

Always a lyric that has spoken to me...

It is an interesting thing to ponder these days though.

For those of you who are finding me randomly -- though I'm not entirely sure how you could, yet...you should know that I am very into politics and I am very liberal. To quote Melissa Etheridge from an episode of "Politically Incorrect" -- "I am so liberal I bleed only from the left side."

Anyway -- I digress -- for folks like me (and I know there are a lot of us -- at least 55 million) this was a very sad week indeed. For reasons that I am still trying to unpack, this country saw fit to re-elect a man who I am pretty sure history will consider to be one of the worst presidents that this country has ever seen. I could go on and on and on about the things with which I disagree with this current administration, but I think that will be for another time as well.

But we come back to the title -- More Than This....I have been struggling for a while now (not just this week though this week has certainly brought a fuzzy picture into clearer focus) with what my role in this world should be. For those who know me well, you know this is something that I struggle with all of the time...am I good person? Am I a good friend? Am I a good daughter? Am I a good citizen? The events of this week have lead me to a place where I feel I need to begin to be more active. There was a time when I was very active in politics and issues and then I stopped. I am sure there are a lot of really "good" reasons for that but really -- it just boils down to laziness so I am vowing to not be so lazy -- at least about this. That's not to say that I didn't participate in this election at all...I did some volunteer work making phone calls for a very cool group of folks at Clean Water Action so while I am very disappointed in the results of November 2, I do feel good about some of the work that I did. But I gotta do more...again, More Than This...

So for those of you who wish to be involved too -- check this out -- I have started a Yahoo Group to help us organize and I'm going to be posting a lot of the stuff that we'll be doing here as well. Keep coming back...

Decisions are made by those who show up....

Ya gotta start somewhere!

Well, it's been a while since I've been the blogging type of girl but here I am.

There's a lot to say and I'm going to say it all, I promise but as the topic says, we have to begin somewhere so this is where we begin.

Keep looking here for thoughts on the world, the universe, politics, music, reading and my inner moppet...
